Map of Bassas Da India Accommodation

Ever been somewhere you have never heard of? Bassa da India means “scattered islands in the Indian Ocean” and is also known as Basse de Judie. It is a kidney shaped island surrounded by a crown of coral reefs that encloses a shallow lagoon of turquoise water. It is situated almost midway between Madagascar and Mozambique and was registered as a marine reserve in 1975 French territory since 1897, but under the administration of a commissioner residing in Reunion in 1968.

Access to these islands is strictly limited. Divers are accompanied by a French official, or Reef Bodyguard, who makes sure that no relics from sunken ships are removed or any of the natural beauty is damaged during dives.

This island in the Southern Mozambican Channel and roughly halfway between Mozambique and Madagascar is still in the process of formation. The coral atoll of Bassas da India sits perched on the edges of an underwater volcanic mountain that rises 3000m (6000ft) from the ocean floor. The surface of this diving heaven is almost completely submerged with high tide and schools of fish can be seen with the naked eye. Bassa da India is one of the last untamed and protected resorts on earth and is 10 km in diameter, which corresponds to a total size (including lagoon) of 80 km².

Butterfly fish, Parrotfish, Anthias and Garoupas mix with Moray eels, Wrasse, Angelfish, Rainbow Runners and Yellow-tip Fusiliers. Each dive promises a new experience as the list of wildlife here is nearly endless.
