Ibo Island is one of the most romantic and unique islands you are likely to visit. It is a tropical, cultural island that revolves around the tide rather than the time. The Ibo Island Lodge is situated on the prime bay facing site of the island, and is made up of 3 impressive mansions with meter thick coral walls, high ceilings and situated in lush, tropical gardens. Here you can spend time on the front or back verandas overlooking the sea views and sunset or the gardens that offer various nooks to relax in, read a book or enjoy a refreshing frosty Mozambican beer. Alternatively you can suntan and drink cocktails next to the two pools or snooze on the swing bench hanging from a huge Marula tree.
Rooms at the lodge are beautifully simple, yet elegant, and are inspired by the heritage of the island with Indian and Portuguese influences, combined with magnificent hand crafted king-size or twin beds, solid mahogany wardrobes crafted by the people of Ibo and spacious en-suite bathrooms with large marble showers.
The large public lounge of the lodge faces the sea and has soft sofas, interesting reading material, over head fans and is a great place to read or soak up the tranquil atmosphere of the lodge and island. The front facing verandas have comfy chairs from where at high tide you can watch graceful dhows sail out to sea, and at low tides, view up to a hundred wading birds feeding in the little pools that the retreating sea left behind. The verandas of the lodge also offer a great place to simply chill out and observe a typical Ibo Island day.
There is lot’s to do at Ibo Island Lodge (visit their website here), and you can be as busy or chilled as you want to be. We suggest starting with the “Ibo of old” guided walk which is included in the rate, where guides will tell you more about the mystical and intriguing history of the island. The lodges best kept secret activity however has to be the sand spit beach reached via a short boat trip. For those in search of a pristine beach experience this is it! The chefs prepare grilled seafood served under a Bedouin tent on the beach and afterwards you can snorkel off into cool blue water, to explore delicate corals and hundreds of fish.
The “Ibo of today” guided cultural experience gives you a chance to learn more about how the islanders live today Traditional African drumming can often be heard wafting along the breeze signaling a festival. You can get to meet some of Ibo’s friendly islanders, visit the school, the witch doctor, and you might even be lucky enough to visit the local disco! There is a great sense of pride amongst the people of Ibo and they are proud of Ibo Island Lodge as this is the largest employer on the island. You can also take to the water to discover more of the Quirimbas National Park in graceful sailing and motorized dhows. If paddling is more your style, with a guide, kayak through the 2nd largest mangrove forest in Africa where the bird life is abundant.
