Ibo Island was the capital of the Cabo Delgado province before this title was given to Pemba and it is still one of the most prominent islands in the Quirimbas Archipelago. Ibo is one of the Quirimbas Islands in the Indian Ocean off northern Mozambique. It is also one of the most ancient settlements in Mozambique where history dates back to at least 1600. The Island was a prosperous trading post on the coast of East Africa. The locals are friendly and outgoing people with some of the most interesting characters who might share their stories.
Ibo Island feels like a place where time stood still and is filled with history and Arab, Chinese, Indian, European and African influences that are still visible around the ancient stone town. Gardens in and around the old town of Ibo Island are something to experience as the scent of frangi pani bushes are mixed by waving palm trees. Ibo Island Lodge (visit their website
here) perfectly merges the history of Ibo Island with modern day facilities like air conditioning and fine linen. This combined with wonderful food, mostly harvested from the sea (including fresh prawns, game fish, lobster and crab), will ensure an island experience that you will never forget!
This island is definitely a photographer’s wonderland with many imposing buildings and interesting ruins begging to be caught on film. It offers guests a historical and cultural haven where you can kayak through the mangrove forest canals, snorkel through fragile coral reefs, sunbathe next to turquoise waters on the sandbank beach or get to know the friendly locals and all of their culture and traditions.
