Ilha do Fogo covers an area of approx 44 hectares and has a circumference of 3.5km. It is situated off the coast of Mainland Mozambique opposite Quelimane and Madagascar and forms part of the Primeira archipelago.

The area is also renowned breeding ground for leatherback turtles.
