Ilha de Mozambique (Island of Mozambique) is a small island off the coast of Nacala Province and is situated between Mossuril Bay and the Mozambique Channel. The island is a reminder of the glorious days when it was a stop-over on the Indian spice route and the hub for Portuguese discoveries.
The island itself is not very big, about 3 km long and between 200
and 500 meters wide. Most historical buildings are at the island's
northern end. Stone Town (Fort São Sebastião) was the capital of
Portuguese East Africa during the sixteenth century and the island is
still filled with ancient fortifications and interesting architecture.
Today Ilha de Mozambique is a UNESCO World Heritage. This means that the area
is maintained by the International World Heritage Program because it is
considered in the interest of the international community to preserve
the site.
Visit Jorge Forjaz´s Hotel on the island and enjoy an evening out on the
town where a meal at the Reliquias Restaurant comes highly recommended.
