Visit “the place of friendly people”, one of the oldest ports on Africa’s eastern coast; Inhambane. Dhows traded there as early as the eleventh century and the port was established and developed during the early sixteenth century when Portuguese explorers established a slave and ivory trading post. Ancient sailors would take advantage of the calm estuary; it became a regular stop over to buy goods and replenish their supplies. Ships do not visit Inhambane’s port as often any longer but the harbour still has the largest fleet of working dhows to this very day!
Bay of Shells is located only eighty kilometres from the Inhambane airport and it is recommended that a 4x4 is used to reach it. It is situated on stunning sand dunes at sea level, which boasts lovely views of the tranquil lagoon and calming sea. The resort is the perfect beach getaway and escape from the commotion of everyday life. It is absolute delight for the keen fisherman and avid scuba diver.
At the resort you will come across twelve luxury en-suite bedrooms with panoramic views of the ocean as well as a fully catered restaurant, also showing off dazzling ocean views. Deep sea fishing is accessible from and at the lodge as well as snorkelling and swimming in crystal clear water with temperatures ranging from twenty six to thirty degrees Celsius all year round. Whale Sharks are common throughout the year and Hump Back Whales can be seen between August and October. The local beach bars, restaurants and curio shops are incredible to explore and lunch with daily catches from the sea to be enjoyed. Flights from Johannesburg to Inhambane are available three times a week or self drive for five hours from Maputo on the newly tarred highway.
