Maputo is the capital of Mozambique (since 1907) with a population of around 1.5 million and is located on the south coast. Maputo was founded in the late 18th century and originally named after Lourenço Marques, a Portuguese trader who reached the area around 1544. After the civil war and since the 1990’s the city is working hard to develop economically.
This energetic and vibrant city of Maputo is a perfect stop-over if you enjoy
experiencing a buzzing, unordered city that holds hidden gems, makeshift
stalls, fascinating building styles and interesting cultural
experiences.
Acasia and Jacaranda trees line the streets and pavements are dotted by
many cafés, world-class restaurants, music venues and markets. This
makes for amazing walking tours and expeditions where tourists can
absorb the mystical seafarer imagery and architectural hotchpotch dating
back 400 years. The Cathedral on Independence Square, the Central
Railway Station (painted by Gustave Eiffel), the grand City Hall, the
Gothic-style Museum of Natural History and the Fortress (now the
Colonial History Museum and one of the oldest buildings) are only a few
of the interesting buildings worth a visit. Experiencing the Tunduro
Gardens should also be on your list of things to do and could be
combined with a visit to the buzzing Municipal Market. This market is
the best place to shop for curios, local art, basketwork and carvings.
Modern buildings include Mousinho de Albuquerue Square, the National
Library and Eduardo Mondlane University.
If nature is what you
crave, then a drive to the swamplands of the Elephant Reserve is
definitely worth it. It is located around 80 km south of Maputo where
three large saline lakes support a wide variety of bird, fish and animal
life. This 236, 000 hectare area is protected and an important nesting
site for sea turtles.
