Map of Niassa Reserve Accommodation
Niassa Reserve is one of the largest conservation areas in Mozambique and covers 42 000 km². This reserve runs along the Lugenda River and is located in the far north of Mozambique and borders Tanzania. Wildlife population is slowly starting to recover from the civil war during the 1970’s and 80’s and visitors can expect a vast untouched wilderness with a strong game population supported by the same eco-system as Tanzania’s vast Selous Game Reserve. There are no fences between these two areas encouraging animal migration between these two parks.
Night-frogging is another very interesting experience on offer and
visitors will be enchanted by the vastness of the starry African sky.
The legendary Lake Niassa is the only freshwater lake in Africa with
turquoise waters and white coastlines. The crystal clear waters
populated by colourful fish is a snorkelers heaven!
The park offers wonderful wildlife safaris and can boast that more than
three quarters of its land is still covered by indigenous vegetation. If
you enjoy getting in touch with nature in its rawest form, Niassa
Reserve holds magic - whether you are a naturalist, photographer or
birder. Around 12 000 elephant, 9 000 sable antelope and thousands of
buffalo roam this area and are accompanied by zebra, kudu, lion,
leopard, spotted hyena, eland, wild dogs and hippopotamus to name a few.
Niassa Reserve comprises woodland, open savannahs, seasonal wetlands and riverside
forests along rivers Rovuma and Lugenda. Niassa Reserve is well known
for its true game experiences where staying in small, mobile safari
camps remove the limitations of most fixed camps.
