Receiving its name because of the golden sunrises over the bay, Ponta do Oura stays true its meaning – ‘place of gold’. It is a quaint little town in southern Mozambique situated just 10km from the South African border. A mere 4 hours from Durban and 10 hours from Johannesburg (currently due to road works) it is the perfect spot for weekend get-aways or even long lazy holidays. It boasts gorgeous beaches, dune forests, incredible diving and never ending azure oceans. The town is bustling with activity and includes a traditional market of food and crafts. A visit to the small cantinas is a must, also be sure to indulge your taste buds at some of the striking local restaurants. The town has a small super market, bottle store, fish shop and bakery so most things are available in the town, including bottled water and ice. Cell phone reception is available on international roaming or in limited spots on normal South African signal. Most of Mozambique is 4×4 territory so a suitable vehicle is advised.
Snuggled in a charming indigenous forest in Ponta Do Oura is where you will find the tranquil tented camp site Phambuka, meaning TO GIVE WAY. It is an intimate operation which caters for limited numbers therefore ensuring personal attention and service. With many alluring features, it boasts a private sandy beach just a short walk from the camp, a dive charter on site, nature trails, amazing bird life and pristine amenities. Camping has truly never been this comfortable. Relaxing in the tranquillity of the tented campsite is an absolute de-stress phenomenon. Being nestled in the native bush, away from the noise and bustle of city living makes for a true nature -conscious and tranquil experience. Phambuka prides itself on being Ponta Do Oura’s ‘best kept secret’, it is nicely nuzzled in a charming indigenous forest but close enough to the town to access the restaurants and bars and experience true local culture. It is the ideal escape for an active and social holiday!
There are various accommodation options to suit both your level of desire to ‘rough it’ as well as your budget. From exclusive luxury safari tents for the more discerning visitor to the highly popular bush tents or the spacious camping sites on the property, Phambuka offers a unique holiday experience difficult to match according to their many loyal returning visitors. The luxury safari tents sleep two people and have their own facilities including en-suite bathrooms. The bush tents also sleep two people and have comfortable beds and linen as well as an electric light. They have spacious communal bathrooms, showers and toilets. There is a large well equipped communal kitchen which has gas stoves, fridges and all the necessary cooking equipment and utensils. There is an open, social dining area, boma and braai area. The bush tents are ideal for dive and social groups, friends and families. There is also an option to bring along your own tent and camping equipment and ‘camp your own way’ by making use of the private and tucked away campsites under the trees.

Once across the border you will pass through a second gate turn right here and head towards the coast. look out for the small white signs with blue writing and a yellow sun on and says “Paire da Oura Sol” (this resort is next door to Phambuka), these boards are all along the road so follow them.
Don’t worry about all the different roads splitting and joining just follow the white “Praire da Oura Sol” signs. You will head towards the coast for a while and then parallel to the coast for a while. Eventually you will come to an “intersection” on the right there will be a big yellow house, keep following the road to the right.
Continue following white “Praire da Oura Sol” signs. You will eventually come into Ponto town, on the left you will pass the market and Fernando’s pub (it is advisable to stop here for a cold beer).
Shortly after the market you will get to an intersection (the only bit of tar road in the town). At this intersection turn right. You will pass the police station on the right. Continue to follow the white signs along this road. Shortly after the police station the road will fork take the left road. The road will continue and double back a bit, just keep following the white boards.
You will soon come to a big green board on the right with “Phambuka” on it, turn right into this gate. As you pass through the entrance turn right immediately and follow the road around and down to the reed wall. Park here you have arrived!! Well done.
