About Ponta Do Ouro |
Ponta Do Ouro lies at the southern tip of Mozambique and just 5km north of the South African border. Ponto is a six and a half hour drive from Johannesburg, South Africa. Ponto is the perfect holiday spot and the town is surrounded by dunes, sea and casuarinas trees. It is becoming recognised as one of the top beach and diving destinations in Southern Africa and will please any person interested in scuba diving, deep sea fishing, snorkelling or swimming.
Restaurants, cafés and bars are dotted along the beachfront where locals
sell their craft and art. This is a laid back town where you can expect
to kick your shoes off without thinking of them until you leave.
Turtles lay their eggs in the soft beach sand and you might even spot a
few as they make their way to their nests. There is a Quad pit between
Ponto Do Ouro and Ponta Malongane. Ponto is great for outdoor holidays
where visitors can explore coastal
forests by 4x4 or dive amongst some of the last high quality off-shore
coral reefs still left on earth. These corals create the most
unbelievable underwater scenery and reefs teem with potato bass,
parrotfish, angelfish, rock cod, eels and more. One of the biggest draw
cards is that you can swim with Whale Sharks that frequent these waters.
These “cows of the sea” are peaceful and beautiful creatures which
normally grow to three times the size of an elephant! Inshore Bottlenose
and Spinner dolphins live in Ponto’s sheltered waters and humpback
whales pass through the area during winter time.
