Zalala Beach Lodge (which opens its doors in February 2012) is a one-hour drive from the port town of Quelimane, the capital of Zambezia province. The Lodge has 10 elegantly furnished bungalows and two 2-bedroom and 2-bathroom family houses (from March or April) facing the expansive 20km long Zalala beach. Lodge facilities include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and extensive grounds to explore.
Zalala Beach is fringed by a pine forest and you can walk along it for miles, simply enjoying watching the fishermen bringing in their nets and looking out at the endless horizon. You can also rent a bike and cycle to one of the reeded bars or restaurants further along the beach.
The area is also rich in music and culture: Zalala hosts a big music and crafts festival on the beach every year in November or December and Quelimane is home to the biggest annual Carnival in Mozambique, which has been likened to the Rio Carnival of Brazil!
Visitors should definitely make use of the interesting excursions on offer. These include the village walk around the neighbouring fishing village, canoe rides to various place of interest, such as the port of Macuse, the landing place of the sixteen century discoverer, Vasco da Gama, a tour of the tea plantations and stunning mountain scenery of the Gurue region and a day out at the Hot Springs where the Lodge has established an eco-visitor centre for guests to enjoy the springs and river walks.
The Lodge operates on a responsible tourism structure and strives to enhance benefits from tourism for local communities through access to jobs, training, and trading opportunities, as well as through lobbying and fundraising to address community needs with respect to schooling, health and improved infrastructures.
