About Tofo |
Tofo is a beautiful eight kilometre stretch of beautiful beach bordering on Mozambique’s signature turquoise sea water compliments of the Indian Ocean. It is situated in the very south of the country and a 6 hour bus trip from Johannesburg. Tofu is not far from Jangamo beach in the south and Barra to the north. There are two beaches in the area namely Tofo Beach and a quieter Tofinho (or little Tofo). Inhambane, the second oldest town in Mozambique, is situated close by and this is where you will find markets selling local arts and craft.
Tofo is not your normal overcrowded and ridiculously priced holiday spot
where 5 star hotels are at the order of the day, but rather a relaxing
playground where visitors let their hair down. Definitely for the
“down-to-earth” crowd. Several backpacker lodges have been set up along
the beach with dorms, singles and camping. Expect to eat a big bowl of
fresh prawns under palm trees while watching beautiful sunsets. Bars and
restaurants look out over the sea and serve ice cold 2M (local beer),
cocktails and scrumptious seafood. There are no shops or banks, there is
a small street market, and a number of small stalls selling basic
items.
If diving is your perfect pass-time, Tofo has amazing dive centres where
friendly personnel will take you to perfect spots. Snorkelling trips
hold amazing surprises and you might encounter giant whale sharks (they
can grow up to 20m), dolphins, manta rays or turtles. The Tofo waters
hold beautiful wonders and those in the know say it’s the best diving
spot in the world. You can also choose horse riding on trails through
the dunes and villages.
