We’ve decided to give you some punchy and honest advice on holidays to Mozambique over the next few months. Every two weeks we will discuss a region in the country, what’s available there, how to get there and recommend some great accommodation. It’s based on our personal experiences and the feedback we get from our happy clients.
This week’s focus will be on the seaside town of Vilanculos.
So why book a holiday here? It offers really good value, is not as crowded as the southern Mozambique resorts, beaches are world class and it’s authentic without being commercial. Great for family holidays, honeymoons and pretty much everything else
This small coastal town is in the subtropical province of Inhambane. It’s 700kms north of Maputo and is best accessed as a fly in destination with flights. If you are driving from SA – you will need an overnight stop en route because of the distances involved. Roads are generally good and there have been amazing improvements in how the notorious traffic police deal with tourists. Border info and advice can be found here.
Vilanculos is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago which we will touch on more during the coming weeks. If your budget is tight and you really want an island lodge – then consider a few nights on the mainland and then finish on one of the luxury island lodges. We have some good value packages that do exactly this.
Most of the hotels and lodges are situated right on the beach, offering calm blue tropical warm water, and the powdery white sands run for miles. You can easily get around safely with local taxis throughout the day. Pretty much all of the taxi drivers speak English and they can give you good advice on where to explore and what to see. There are loads of activities on offer – from scuba diving to horse riding, deep sea fishing and dolphin safaris. There’s also a great selection of local restaurants, bars and authentic markets to visit.
Here’s a few suggestions on where to stay, and our favourite properties.
