If you are travelling from Gauteng the easiest route is to make your way to Komatipoort along the N4 and on to the Lebombo Border Post. Getting through is relatively easy and as Soth Africans you automatically get a free visa on arrival valid for 30 days. International Travellers who are self-driving can purchase a Mozambique visa on arrival. Get your car insurance easily for Mozambique on the SA side at any of the nearby fuel stations. Hollard Insurance have outlets at these garages and competent staff to assist you in buying car insurance for Mozambique.

Stay on the main road until you reach Matola and here is where you need to stay on the EN1 in order to bypass Maputo. There are still a few detours but these are getting less and less. Toll stations are being established along the whole route so get ready to pay for the use of the new road.

Once you reach the town of Macia – about 3 hours north of Maputo you need to make a right onto the tarred road to Bilene. It’s a little narrow but reasonably good tar and is well sign posted. As you make the right turn there is a Shoprite supermarket in Macia that is worth a stop for buying bulk supplies for your trip to Bilene.
