A 2023 wildlife safari of a lifetime in Mozambique
My brother and I took our respective families on a trip of a lifetime to Mozambique. Both of us had young kids and were concerned of the challenges ahead on a multi destination safari. After a week in South Africa, we flew into Beira and thanks to the amazing service from Mozambique Travel – everything after that went perfectly. We were collected at the airport by a competent and knowledgeable English-speaking driver Bahir who looked after us for the next ten days. We explored Beira and after our safari to Gorongosa went on another big adventure to Vilanculos.
But that’s another story… Wild Camp in Gorongosa was simply wild. On arrival there were lions in camp and the kids initially terrified were very excited as the lions strolled off to hunt in the sunset and leave us to enjoy a bush barbeque in the wilds of Africa. It was a first night in the real African bush that none of us will ever forget, overlooking a waterhole with all kinds of animal sightings. Morning and afternoon game drives the next day and we saw so much game. Comfy tents with cotton sheets and private showers with hot water. Food was simply exceptional and the best thing ever – there was no wi-fi in camp. Game walks on our last day with incredible guides up close and personal with some of Africa’s real big five animals. Our kids couldn’t believe it and are still speaking about the buffalo encounter on our return to Germany! We felt safe at all times and especially really looked after. Trust me and go there soon. Before it becomes another Kruger National Park with hundreds of tourists and you don’t feel as special as we did. Test and Richard – world class safari guides and highly recommended. We love Gorongosa National Park.
You won’t be disappointed!
I had the recent pleasure of visiting Ilha de Mozambique as a guide for a VIP client in July 2023. It’s been quite a while since I was on Ilha and had visited Villa Sands, but it still definitely the best accommodation and maintains the best position on Ilha. My visit was amazing and the service and attention to detail flawless.
Marcus and his wife Gizela were incredible hosts and really knew how to mingle and interact with their guests. Villa Sands was completely full that evening, but they and their team handled things effortlessly. Table and bar service five-star, good wine list with some decent offerings from Porto and South Africa and the food was again five stars. The seared tuna with soy and ginger is a must, as well as the local clams steamed in white wine with fresh bread on the side. What I liked as well, is how Marcus kept updating guests on what was fresh, what had just come in from the boats and the menu morphed accordingly with the emphasis around the freshest of seafood. The restaurant overlooks the bay and at high tide the waves lap the walls near your table.
I didn’t have much time for activities except a guided tour with local expert Edi – organized by the hotel. It’s a fascinating island to explore and even though this was my 6th visit here – it still retained its charm and sense of mystery. And I discovered some amazing side streets, new buildings and architectural gems I hadn’t seen before.
Go to Ilah de Mozambique – and stay at Villa Sands. You won’t be disappointed!
Sentidos is super
Great location, birds, staff and views and no mosquitoes! The wooden accessories are so pretty. My boyfriend surfed all day, I lay at the pool and swam all day. Lagoon birding is worth it!
Bahia Mar Best Holiday Hotel
Do yourself a favour and book this place, you won’t regret it. The Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel. Also, the best time to see the Southern Right and Humpback whales is August and September so go then. Vilanculos is so remote and no one really knows about it, we found. The hotel is eco-friendly which pleased us a lot.
Azura is amazing so we will be back!
We had a great 5-night stay at Azura Benguerra and found the beach just like all the pictures. You can visit the island in a safari jeep – nice sand dunes, a few villages and beautiful waters everywhere. Highlights of the hotel are the rooms with little private pools right on the beach. Food made our day too. We went diving, chartered a boat for some island hopping… shew! We never wanted to go home…
