Time spent at Mjejane River Lodge delivers an immersive Kruger safari defined by scale, biodiversity, and freedom of movement.
Mjejane offers twice-daily guided safari activities within its private reserve and, when operating conditions allow, inside Kruger National Park. Authorized safari vehicles may cross the Crocodile River using the reserve’s private low-water bridge.
Access across the bridge depends on water levels, weather, permissions and operational decisions. It should be seen as a valuable feature rather than an unconditional guarantee. When the bridge is unavailable, the guides adjust the safari plan according to the accessible traversing areas.
Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino occur within the wider ecosystem, together with African wild dog, hyena, plains game and varied birdlife. The guides interpret tracks, behavior and the river environment rather than treating each drive as a race through a wildlife checklist.
Mjejane does not offer the private pools, architectural drama or extensive facilities found at the most expensive Sabi Sand lodges. Its strengths are river views, accessibility, comfortable accommodation and comparatively good safari value.

Mjejane River Lodge can form the safari component of two distinctly different Mozambique journeys. Its position near the Lebombo border makes it particularly practical for travelers continuing overland toward Maputo and the southern coast, while access to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport opens a second route toward Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago.
For southern Mozambique, Mjejane can be combined with a Maputo stay, White Pearl at Ponta Mamoli, Machangulo Beach Lodge or the Santa Maria Peninsula. This route can offer good overall value by avoiding an additional regional flight, although border formalities and the final road or boat transfer must be incorporated into the itinerary.
Travelers wanting Vilanculos, Benguerra Island or Bazaruto Island can instead transfer from Mjejane to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and use a regional Vilanculos service when it operates on their travel date. Island stays then require the appropriate helicopter or boat connection.
Mozambique Travel compares both routes according to the travelers, budget, available time, regional flight days and preferred beach experience before confirming the complete safari-and-beach holiday.

MOZAMBIQUE TRAVEL
All 17 rooms have en suite bathrooms, air conditioning and private patios facing the Crocodile River.
A relaxed, sociable lodge atmosphere combines comfortable accommodation and river views without the price positioning of premium Sabi Sand lodges.
Enjoy twice-daily guided safari activities within Mjejane Game Reserve, with possible access into Kruger when operating conditions allow.
Continue overland through the Lebombo border toward southern Mozambique or transfer to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport for selected Vilanculos flights.

Mjejane River Lodge combines a Greater Kruger safari with one of the most practical locations for continuing into Mozambique. Set within Mjejane Game Reserve on the southern bank of the Crocodile River, it is well positioned for either an overland journey through the Lebombo border or an onward flight from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport.
The lodge has 17 rooms, each with a private patio overlooking the river. Its style is comfortable and relaxed rather than ultra-luxurious, making it a strong choice for travelers who want a credible private safari while preserving more of their holiday budget for Mozambique.
Mjejane is part of the Greater Kruger conservation landscape. Wildlife moves between the reserve and neighboring Kruger areas, while the river attracts animals and birds throughout the year. Sightings remain unpredictable, but the riverfront position allows the safari experience to continue while guests are at the lodge.
The 17 rooms have en suite bathrooms, air conditioning, tea and coffee facilities, minibar fridges and private patios facing the Crocodile River. Current sources publish different category breakdowns, so we confirm the available room type and configuration for each booking.
The lodge also has a swimming pool, dining areas, bar and outdoor boma. Its shared spaces face the river, allowing guests to watch the opposite bank between morning and afternoon activities.
Mjejane suits travelers who are comfortable with a sociable lodge atmosphere and conventional hotel-style rooms. It is less appropriate for guests seeking complete seclusion, private plunge pools or highly contemporary design.
The river setting is particularly valuable during a three or four-night stay. Time between drives does not feel disconnected from the wilderness, and passing animals can create memorable sightings without leaving the lodge.

Mjejane is approximately 30 to 40 kilometers from the Lebombo border post, making it one of the most practical safari lodges for an overland journey into Mozambique.
After leaving the reserve, guests travel east along the N4 toward Komatipoort before completing South African departure and Mozambican arrival formalities. The journey then continues through Ressano Garcia toward Maputo and the southern coast.
This route can work particularly well with:
- A Maputo city stay
- White Pearl at Ponta Mamoli
- Machangulo Beach Lodge
- The Santa Maria Peninsula
- A combined Maputo and beach itinerary
Mjejane is approximately 125 kilometers by road from central Maputo, but the distance does not predict the total transfer time. Border queues, immigration procedures, traffic and the final coastal transfer must all be considered.
White Pearl, Machangulo and Santa Maria require additional travel beyond Maputo. We plan the complete road and, where necessary, boat sequence rather than treating Maputo as the end of the transfer.
Travelers continuing to Vilanculos or the Bazaruto Archipelago can transfer from Mjejane to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. The road journey usually takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour, depending on the collection point and traffic.
Regional flights from Kruger Mpumalanga to Vilanculos operate on selected days. When the service matches the itinerary, it provides a practical route to Vilanculos mainland lodges, Benguerra Island and Bazaruto Island.
Island guests continue from Vilanculos by helicopter or boat. The regional flight, luggage limits and island transfer must be confirmed together.
When the direct regional service does not operate, the itinerary may require a Johannesburg connection or a change to the safari dates. We check the live schedule before recommending the order and number of nights.
We recommend Mjejane to couples, families and small groups who want a comfortable Greater Kruger safari at a more moderate price than the premium Sabi Sand properties.
It is particularly useful for travelers who want to:
- Continue overland into southern Mozambique
- Fly from Kruger Mpumalanga to Vilanculos
- Divide the holiday budget between safari and a premium beach lodge
- Arrive by road from Johannesburg or within Southern Africa
- Stay beside the Crocodile River
- Combine private-reserve drives with possible access into Kruger
We would recommend another lodge to travelers wanting exceptional architectural design, very low guest numbers or private-pool suites. Families with very young children may also find another property’s activity policy easier.
Mjejane should be chosen because its location, river setting and price suit the complete journey, not because it imitates a more expensive lodge.

Tell us who is traveling, the children’s ages, how much time you have and what you want from the Mozambique portion of the holiday.
We will establish whether Mjejane provides the right safari experience and then compare the two onward routes. For one family, that may mean traveling overland to Maputo and White Pearl. For another couple, it may mean flying from Kruger Mpumalanga to Vilanculos and continuing to Benguerra Island.
After 25 years of arranging Mozambique holidays, we understand that the shortest distance is not always the easiest journey and the most expensive lodge is not automatically the best choice. We will coordinate the rooms, safari activities, border transfer, regional flights and beach arrangements as one personal itinerary, with the holiday budget used where it will make the greatest difference.
