One Honeymoon, Two Worlds: Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago
Staying in Vilanculos does not mean choosing the mainland instead of the
Bazaruto Archipelago. One of the strongest reasons to honeymoon here is the ability to experience both in completely different ways.
The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park lies offshore, and excursions from Vilanculos allow couples to enter its protected marine environment without relocating their entire honeymoon to an island resort. Depending on conditions and the excursion you choose, a day might centre on snorkelling, diving, sailing, beaches or time on one of the islands before returning to Vilanculos.
That distinction creates an interesting choice. Stay in the archipelago, and the islands become the setting for your entire honeymoon. Stay in Vilanculos, and they become one of its highlights.
For couples who like variety, the latter can be surprisingly appealing. You retain restaurants, mainland experiences and a wider choice of accommodation while still setting aside a day or more for the reefs, sand and open water that make this part of Mozambique extraordinary.
It also means you should not judge a Vilanculos hotel purely by what happens within its boundaries. Location, excursion access and how easily the property can help organise your time on the water can be just as important as the size of the swimming pool.
