Which Part of Mozambique Should You Visit?

Bazaruto Archipelago

Best for: Private islands, luxury beach holidays, honeymoons and marine experiences
Gateway: Vilanculos Airport
Final transfer: Boat or helicopter

The Bazaruto Archipelago is Mozambique’s leading private-island region. Benguerra and Bazaruto offer luxury resorts, warm Indian Ocean water, protected marine environments and a secluded style of holiday.

Vilanculos

Best for: Mainland beaches, families, island excursions and flexible holidays
Gateway: Vilanculos Airport
Final transfer: Road transfer

Vilanculos offers convenient airport access, a broad range of accommodation and easy excursions into the Bazaruto Archipelago. It suits travellers who want more independence than a private-island resort provides.

Gorongosa National Park

Best for: Conservation-led safaris, biodiversity and Mozambique-only journeys
Gateway: Beira Airport
Final transfer: Prearranged road transfer

Gorongosa offers a safari shaped by ecological restoration, wildlife recovery and community partnerships. It can be visited independently or combined with Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Maputo and Machangulo

Best for: City and beach combinations, culture and shorter coastal escapes
Gateway: Maputo International Airport
Final transfer: Road or road-and-boat transfer

Maputo adds restaurants, history and contemporary culture to a Mozambique journey. Machangulo provides a quieter coastal escape within reach of the capital.

Inhambane, Tofo and Barra

Best for: Diving, marine life, mainland beaches and relaxed coastal holidays
Gateway: Inhambane or Vilanculos, depending on the property and current flights
Final transfer: Road transfer

The Inhambane coastline offers an informal mainland experience with diving, ocean activities and varied accommodation. Tofo and Barra have distinct atmospheres, so the exact location should be considered carefully.

Kruger National Park

Location: South Africa
Best for: Big Five safaris before or after Mozambique
Connection: Regional flight, Johannesburg connection or planned road-and-air route

Kruger is not in Mozambique. It appears on the map because it combines naturally with Vilanculos, Benguerra Island and Bazaruto Island.

Benguerra Island or Bazaruto Island?

Both islands are reached through Vilanculos, but they offer different experiences.

Benguerra is particularly strong for intimate lodges, private villas, honeymoons and personalised service. Bazaruto provides a larger island environment with established resort facilities and organised activities.

The correct choice depends on your preferred resort style, privacy, budget and transfer arrangements.

Plan the Complete Journey, Not Only the Destination

A map shows where places are located. It cannot show whether the route will work for your dates.

A successful itinerary must consider:

  • Available flights
  • Airport arrival times
  • Road-transfer duration
  • Boat and helicopter windows
  • Luggage restrictions
  • Lodge check-in arrangements
  • Number of usable nights
  • Children’s ages and mobility
  • Seasonal conditions
  • Suitable room availability

Mozambique Travel can help you move from map research to a realistic, properly connected holiday.
