Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary

The Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary south of Vilanculos, is one of the most bio diverse reserves in Africa and covers an area of 30,000 hectares.

It is made up of coastal dunes, mudflats, bush and wetland, as well as miles of pristine beaches that shelter both deep and shallow reef ecosystems. Game was reintroduced into the sanctuary from as early 2008 so sightings of eland, Burchell’s zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and eland are common. Along the coast the largest population in Africa of the endangered dugong live and are often spotted alongside Leatherback turtles.. There are also over 300 species of birds present in the reserve.
