&Beyond Benguerra Island is one of Mozambique’s most established luxury beach lodges. First opened in 1988, it occupies a prime position where indigenous forest meets a sheltered crescent of white sand on Benguerra Island.

The lodge has only 13 accommodations: two romantic Cabanas, ten Casinhas and one three-bedroom Casa Família. Every accommodation has an ocean view, private plunge pool, shaded outdoor sala and dedicated loungers on the beach.

This is a quieter, more character-led experience than a contemporary resort. The thatched architecture, tropical gardens and interiors draw on African and Portuguese influences, while the traditional dhow bar and relaxed dining spaces preserve a strong connection to the island.

Couples are the natural audience. Days can be spent privately beside the pool or on the beach, while castaway picnics, dhow cruises, horse rides and beach dinners create memorable shared experiences.

The lodge is luxurious without feeling formal or showy. It suits travelers who value privacy, history and a beautiful position more than modern resort facilities. Choosing Your Villa at &Beyond Benguerra Island

&Beyond Benguerra has three accommodation categories, all with private plunge pools and direct access to the beach. The decision is therefore less about basic facilities and more about space, privacy and who is traveling.

The two 50-square-meter Cabanas are the lodge’s most intimate rooms and our first choice for honeymooners. Each has a private veranda, shaded sala with a hanging daybed, rim-flow pool and dedicated loungers on the beach. Their smaller scale creates a cozy and romantic atmosphere for two.

The ten 60-square-meter Casinhas provide additional indoor space, including a small sitting area beside the bedroom. They have the same private pool, outdoor sala and beachfront position but offer more room for a longer stay. A Casinha can accommodate up to two children aged 16 or younger, although it is best suited to couples or a small family comfortable sharing one open-plan space.

Casa Família is the lodge’s only dedicated family residence. It has three interleading en-suite bedrooms, a central lounge, private pool and sheltered veranda overlooking the beach. The villa accommodates up to four adults and two children, making it suitable for one family, a multi-generational group or two couples traveling with children.

Because there is only one Casa Família and two Cabanas, these categories can fill well in advance. Mozambique Travel will compare the available room types and total package price before recommending the best fit.

Island Experiences at &Beyond Benguerra

&Beyond Benguerra offers enough variety for adventurous travelers while remaining an excellent place to do very little. The lodge’s permanent channel provides convenient boat access even as the island’s tides change.

Snorkeling and scuba diving reveal the reefs of the Bazaruto Archipelago, including excursions toward Two Mile Reef when conditions allow. The on-site dive center offers experiences for qualified divers as well as PADI courses for beginners.

Couples can sail by traditional dhow at sunset, kayak or paddleboard along the coast, explore Benguerra on horseback or arrange a castaway picnic on a secluded beach. Island expeditions introduce guests to the dunes, lakes, birdlife and communities beyond the lodge.

Fishing, scenic helicopter flights, horse swimming and specialist excursions can also be arranged. Some activities carry an additional cost and remain subject to weather, tides, minimum numbers and seasonal conditions.

There is no pressure to fill every day. Many guests spend their most memorable hours beside their private pool, reading in the hanging daybed or walking the beach. We recommend choosing two or three priority experiences before travel and leaving enough space for the island’s slower rhythm.

Combine &Beyond Benguerra with an African Safari

&Beyond Benguerra is particularly well suited to a luxury safari-and-beach holiday. Couples can move from an intimate safari lodge to an equally private island setting without the style of the journey changing completely.

The strongest combinations include &Beyond’s safari lodges in the Sabi Sands, Greater Kruger, Botswana or East Africa. Using the same lodge group can create greater continuity in service and trip planning, although travelers are not limited to &Beyond properties.

Regional flights connect Vilanculos with Johannesburg and selected Southern African gateways. From Vilanculos, guests complete the journey to Benguerra Island by scenic helicopter transfer. We check the regional schedule, international arrival and helicopter connection before confirming the itinerary.

Four or five nights on Benguerra works well after a shorter safari. Honeymooners and long-haul travelers should consider five or six nights, allowing time for island experiences and completely unscheduled days.

&Beyond Benguerra is not the most contemporary lodge on the island, and that is part of its appeal. It feels established, relaxed and connected to its setting. We recommend it to couples who prefer character, privacy and thoughtful experiences over a lively social scene or highly polished modern design.

It is particularly strong for honeymooners, anniversary couples and travelers finishing a high-end African safari. The two Cabanas provide an intimate retreat for two, while the Casinhas offer slightly more space without losing privacy. Casa Família allows one family or small group to share a private residence.

The lodge’s greatest assets are its position, privacy and sense of history. It does not try to compete with Azura’s contemporary villa design or Anantara’s extensive resort facilities. Instead, it offers thatched architecture, tropical gardens, personal service and experiences that feel connected to Benguerra Island.

Travelers wanting a lively resort, several restaurants or extensive facilities for children should consider Anantara Bazaruto. Guests prioritizing modern design may prefer Azura Benguerra. Couples drawn to understated luxury, a beautiful sheltered beach and the established &Beyond style will often find this the better match.

The correct choice depends less on star rating, because all three are luxury properties, and more on the atmosphere in which you want to spend your holiday.
