TRAVEL PACKAGE OVERVIEW
Botswana Wilderness and Mozambique Island in One Journey
Begin among the floodplains, lagoons and wildlife of Botswana’s Okavango Delta and finish beside the Indian Ocean on Benguerra Island. This nine-night safari-and-beach holiday combines two different Delta camps with four nights at Azura Benguerra in Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago.
The safari is designed to show more than one side of the Okavango. Camp Moremi provides land-based game viewing and access to the wildlife-rich Xakanaxa area, while Xugana Island Lodge shifts the focus towards permanent waterways, boats and mokoro excursions.
After an overnight pause in Johannesburg, fly to Vilanculos and continue by helicopter over the Bazaruto Archipelago. Four nights at Azura provide private plunge-pool accommodation, inclusive dining and enough time for both island experiences and rest.

Why the Okavango Comes Before Bazaruto
The Okavango Delta and Bazaruto Archipelago are both shaped by water, but the experiences could not be more different. In Botswana, seasonal floodwater spreads across an inland wilderness of channels, lagoons, reed beds and islands. Wildlife gathers along the water, while game drives, boats and mokoros reveal the landscape from different perspectives.
Bazaruto replaces freshwater channels with the warm Indian Ocean. The safari schedule falls away, and days become choices between snorkelling, dhow sailing, island exploration and remaining beside your private pool.
The order is important. Botswana comes first because safari involves early starts, changing wildlife conditions and frequent movement between activities. Mozambique follows because the island gives the journey somewhere to settle. The contrast builds naturally from wildlife and exploration to marine experiences, privacy and rest.

Two Delta Perspectives and a Private Island Villa
Camp Moremi is positioned beside Xakanaxa Lagoon in the Moremi Game Reserve, where woodland, floodplain and permanent water create a varied wildlife environment. Elevated guest areas overlook the lagoon, while safari activities explore one of the most productive sections of the Okavango ecosystem.
Xugana Island Lodge shifts the emphasis from game drives to water. It overlooks one of the Delta’s largest permanent lagoons and provides access to channels lined with papyrus, reed beds and small islands.
At Azura Benguerra, private beachfront accommodation includes a plunge pool, shaded sala and personal Mozambican host. Meals, selected drinks and house wines are included, allowing the beach portion to feel relaxed and self-contained after the more active Delta days.
Land-Based Safari, Delta Waterways and Island Time
At Camp Moremi, game drives offer opportunities to encounter elephants, buffalo, antelope and predators, including lion and leopard. Wildlife is never guaranteed, but the variety of habitats makes the Xakanaxa area rewarding for first-time safari travellers and experienced visitors alike. Boat activities may provide another perspective when water and operating conditions allow.
At Xugana, mokoro excursions create a quieter way to enter narrower waterways, with a guide poling the traditional canoe through channels where birds, plants and smaller wildlife become more prominent. Motorboat outings cover greater distances and reveal the wider lagoon system. Seasonal fishing and guided island walks may also be available according to conditions and lodge arrangements.
At Azura, selected experiences typically include a sunset dhow cruise, guided island drive and non-motorised water sports. Diving, fishing, horse riding, spa treatments and private boat excursions can be added separately.

Why the Johannesburg Overnight Is Essential
Travel between a remote Okavango camp and Benguerra Island generally requires a connection through Maun and Johannesburg. Attempting to complete every sector in one day can create unrealistic connection times and leave the Mozambique flight or island helicopter vulnerable to delays.
After the final Delta activity, a light aircraft returns guests to Maun for the flight to Johannesburg. One night at The Peech Hotel creates a comfortable break before the next morning’s flight to Vilanculos.
This overnight is not inserted simply to lengthen the itinerary. It protects the two most expensive parts of the journey from a missed connection and avoids ending a Botswana safari with a stressful race through several airports. It can also become a practical meeting point for travellers arriving from Victoria Falls, Cape Town or another Southern African destination.
For Travellers Who Want Safari Depth Before a Private Island Finish
This itinerary suits travellers who want more than a single safari camp before their beach stay. Camp Moremi and Xugana provide land- and water-focused Delta experiences, while Azura creates a private island conclusion rather than a hurried add-on.
It works as a complete ten-day holiday or as the core of a longer journey incorporating Victoria Falls, Cape Town, Chobe or the Greater Kruger region. Couples and families seeking a slower finish can extend Azura to five, six or seven nights.
Each addition should have enough nights to justify another flight and change of accommodation. Mozambique Travel can recommend a sequence that protects connections and avoids unnecessary backtracking.
Dynamic Pricing for an Okavango and Bazaruto Island Journey
This is an international package with dynamic localised pricing. The rate displayed in the package panel may appear in dollars, euros, pounds or rand according to the visitor’s location.
Your final quotation will depend on travel dates, Botswana’s safari season, Camp Moremi and Xugana availability, regional flight class, the Johannesburg overnight and Azura’s available villa category.
The itinerary is subject to safari camp, island villa and regional flight availability. Water-based activities also depend on seasonal conditions.

Okavango Delta and Bazaruto Island Holiday FAQs
This Botswana and Mozambique package involves safari aircraft, regional flights, a Johannesburg overnight and a helicopter transfer. These answers explain the route, seasonal Delta conditions and how additional African destinations can be incorporated.
What makes the Okavango Delta and Bazaruto combination so popular?
This safari and beach combination offers two completely different African landscapes in one itinerary. The Okavango Delta provides exceptional wildlife viewing and water based safaris, while the Bazaruto Archipelago delivers white sand beaches, coral reefs and marine adventures. Together they create a balanced holiday combining wildlife encounters with ocean relaxation.
How do travelers move between Botswana and Mozambique on this itinerary?
Guests typically fly from the Okavango Delta to Johannesburg via Maun, then continue on a scheduled flight to Vilanculos in Mozambique. From Vilanculos a helicopter transfer takes visitors to Benguerra Island. Mozambique Travel coordinates these flights and transfers to ensure smooth connections throughout the journey.
What wildlife can be seen in the Okavango Delta?
The Okavango Delta is home to some of Africa’s most diverse wildlife. Visitors frequently see elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles. Birdlife is exceptional with more than 400 recorded species. Seasonal floods create rich habitats that support large concentrations of animals throughout the year.
What activities are available in the Bazaruto Archipelago?
Visitors staying on Benguerra Island can enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, dhow sailing, deep sea fishing, kayaking and island hopping excursions. Sandbank picnics and sunset dhow cruises are especially popular. The protected marine park offers clear water and vibrant coral reefs ideal for ocean exploration.
How far in advance should you book a Botswana and Mozambique safari and beach holiday?
Most travelers begin planning safari and beach holidays 9 to 12 months before travel. Popular lodges in the Okavango Delta and the Bazaruto Archipelago have limited rooms and often fill early, particularly during the peak travel months between June and October. Booking early ensures better lodge availability and flight connections.
