Why we love Sky Island

Position, position and position. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the bays of Ponta Malongane and Ponta do Ouro the setting is epic.

You are so high up you can see the horizons meniscus and the views are to die for.

The accommodation at Sky Island is clean, comfortable and offers great value. Try the premium Sky View Tent if you want to treat yourself.

Service and food at the restaurant are excellent and the beach below the resort is world class.

It is easily accessible from Kosi Bay or Maputo, but a 4X4 is required for the last 5 km.

Welcome to Sky Island Resort

Sky Island is situated at Ponta Malongane and is the only resort in the area offering good value accommodation and a number of luxury suites. The setting is quite something as you gaze out to sea from a hill overlooking a giant bay. Sit in the restaurant and watch whales and dolphins frolic in the Indian Ocean below you.

The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff well trained and happy to help you with anything you need. The food and service are top of the box – try the specialty deboned chicken or the giant Mozambique tiger prawns if you fancy treating yourself.

Sky Island Resort is perfect for self-drive 4X4 holidays from South Africa. The Road from the Kosi Bay border is tarred, and the border post is 20 minutes away. You can also fly into Maputo and get a transfer to the lodge. There is plenty to do if you are activity focused and the resort is one of the best paragliding spots in Mozambique. But you don’t need to be a paraglider to go there. It is perfect for couples and families wanting an authentic and value for money holiday in Mozambique.

Luxury Sky View Tents

A room with a view…

These are the only accommodation options at Sky that are not equipped for self-catering, but certainly the premium rooms in the lodge. The views from the private deck are hard to describe and you are positioned on the top of a hill with uninterrupted views of the bay and horizon.

You have your own Espresso station, a fridge, king size extra length bed and beautiful wooden floors throughout.

Meadow Chalets Sky Island

The Meadow Chalets at Sky Island Resort are all self-catering units, each with its own well-equipped kitchenette for when you don’t feel like a restaurant meal. There is a kettle, microwave, fridge and gas cooker in each unit.

A king size extra length bed plus a sleeper couch for kids if needed is standard – and an outside hot and cold shower plus of course the en suite bathroom.

The Meadow Chalets are surrounded by unspoiled coastal forest and very private. The chalets have been built with local materials and blend in perfectly with the bush and coastal forest surrounding them.

Sky Island Super Deluxe Camps

There are three super deluxe camps at Sky Island, and they are perfect for families and groups of friends. There are three safari tents per camp and a funky and shared outside toilet and shower. All tents offer a king size bed or twin configuration with fans and charging points for your convenience.

The braai area is the central point and there is a coffee station plus an equipped kitchen to prepare your own meals at your leisure. This is a custom-made Mozambique glamping experience that is super comfortable and the perfect place to stay.

Activities at Sky Island Resort

Sky Island is a specialty paragliding lodge, and the topography and wind conditions are excellent. The owner Sean Wookey is an experienced pilot and instructor as is his capable activities manager Lunchbox. Lunchbox has thousands of flights under his belt in South Africa and Mozambique and has a nice way about him in explaining the joys of gliding and convincing you to do a tandem jump with him. Tandem jumps last 15 minutes. You can also do a two-day introductory course to paragliding if it takes your fancy.

Other optional activities at Sky Island Mozambique include scuba diving, snorkeling, archery, ocean safaris, quad biking and dune boarding.

The best thing to do is simply wander down the powdery white beach that go on for miles in each direction.

How to get to Ponta Malongane and Sky Island Resort

Flying into Maputo from South Africa is an easy option with regular flights daily from Johannesburg and 3 flights a week direct from Cape Town. You will be collected at the airport and transferred to Sky Island in under two hours.

If you wish to self-drive from Kwazulu Natal or Johannesburg the new tar road makes it nice and easy. Head to Ponta do Ouro and take the dirt road (4X4) north to Ponta Malongane. 5 km along that road you will see the sign to Sky Island Resort on the right and 500m later you are at the lodge.
