Sussurro sits on the secluded Nhamabue Peninsula, north of Vilanculos, beside a calm turquoise lagoon where traditional dhows still move with the tides. The wilder Indian Ocean coastline is within walking distance, giving guests access to two contrasting coastal environments.
Created by owners Adam Humphreys and Sarah Birkett, the hotel took four years to build. Mozambican artisans formed part of the construction team, creating buildings, furniture and decorative pieces that give Sussurro an unmistakable connection to its location.
The result is an intimate hotel with six private bungalows, a separate Family Suite and a collection of shared spaces designed for quiet relaxation. These include a lap pool, library, gallery, restaurant, guest bar and elemental yoga deck overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Sussurro’s six original bungalows are positioned separately along the lagoon, giving each suite privacy, water views and a generous sense of space. Every bungalow provides more than 90 square metres of indoor and outdoor living area.
High thatched ceilings, large openings and shaded verandas create natural airflow and connect the interiors with the changing light and colors of the lagoon. Each bungalow has a mosquito-netted bed, linen bedding, handcrafted furniture and African-sourced decorative pieces.
The bathrooms include indoor and outdoor bathing areas, with deep outdoor tubs providing a memorable place to relax beneath the open sky. Private waterfront verandas offer daybeds and seating for reading, resting and watching dhows move across the lagoon.
Sussurro is designed for travellers who are comfortable allowing the setting to shape the day. The sheltered lagoon supports gentle water activities, while the ocean coastline, mangroves and nearby communities provide opportunities for longer excursions.
Included non-motorized activities can feature stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing. Guests can also join yoga sessions, explore the peninsula by bicycle or spend time beside the lap pool, in the library or on their private veranda.
