Maputo International Airport is Mozambique’s principal international gateway and the most practical arrival point for Maputo, southern Mozambique and selected Machangulo Peninsula holidays.

Flights between Johannesburg and Maputo are among the shortest regional routes into Mozambique. However, travellers continuing beyond the capital must consider the timing of their road, boat or domestic flight connection. A later arrival may require an overnight stay in Maputo before the journey continues.

Vilanculos Airport is the principal leisure gateway for mainland Vilanculos, Benguerra Island, Bazaruto Island and the wider Bazaruto Archipelago. Travellers can reach Vilanculos on selected direct services or through Maputo, depending on the airline, operating day and travel date.

Mainland guests normally continue by road transfer. Island guests generally require a boat or helicopter connection arranged by the resort or included in their holiday package.

The international flight should never be booked without checking the latest permitted arrival time for the island transfer. Boat services may depend on daylight, weather and sea conditions, while helicopters may operate with stricter baggage limits than the international airline.

Gorongosa deserves sufficient time and should not be treated as a hurried stop between flights. A late arrival in Beira may make an overnight stay necessary before continuing to the park the following day.
