Muzimu Tented Camp is a secluded safari lodge designed for travelers seeking renewal, quiet immersion, and a deeper connection to nature.
Muzimu is Gorongosa National Park’s most intimate and refined safari lodge. Six spacious East African-style tented suites are positioned beside the Mussicadzi River, each with an en suite bathroom and private deck. A shaded lounge, open dining spaces and swimming pool provide welcome comfort between activities without disconnecting guests from the surrounding wilderness.
The lodge is particularly well suited to couples, honeymooners, mature travellers and experienced safari clients who want excellent guiding, attentive service and a meaningful conservation experience. It is more polished than Chicari Camp but remains relaxed and strongly connected to Gorongosa. This is not a conventional resort or a safari built around guaranteed Big Five sightings. Its appeal lies in varied habitats, low vehicle density, recovering wildlife populations and one of Africa’s most important restoration stories.
Mozambique Travel has arranged Gorongosa safaris since 2003. Our Managing Director inspected Muzimu and Chicari in July 2026, and our recent bookings provide current knowledge of the camps, flights, additional costs and complete journey. We use that experience to determine whether Muzimu, Chicari or a combination of both offers the best safari for each traveller.

Featured Muzimu Lodge Gorongosa and Bazaruto Packages
Muzimu should be booked as part of a complete Gorongosa itinerary, not simply as an isolated lodge reservation. Most international guests fly through Beira and connect with Air Gorongosa to Chitengo Airstrip. Regional flights, light-aircraft schedules, luggage restrictions and camp transfers must work together, and a Beira overnight may be necessary when connections do not align.
We generally recommend at least four nights in Gorongosa, with five nights providing a more rewarding and less hurried safari. Longer itineraries can combine Muzimu’s riverside comfort with Chicari’s more adventurous pan-facing setting. Current five-night and seven-night offers will be checked against the traveller’s dates and preferred camp combination.
Selected Air Gorongosa services connect the national park with Vilanculos and the Bazaruto region. Mozambique Travel can combine Muzimu with Azura Benguerra, Azura Marlin Beach, &Beyond Benguerra Island, Anantara Bazaruto, Kisawa Sanctuary or a carefully selected Vilanculos property. We coordinate the safari, flights, island transfer and beach stay as one complete Mozambique holiday.

Muzimu Lodge occupies a quiet position beside the Mussicadzi River inside Gorongosa National Park. Its name refers to a guardian spirit, reflecting the lodge’s connection to the landscape and the wider restoration of this remarkable protected area.
With only six tented suites, Muzimu feels personal and unhurried. The experience combines attentive hospitality, excellent guiding and understated comfort rather than excessive formality. Guests can spend the morning exploring Gorongosa, return for lunch and a swim, and head out again when the afternoon becomes cooler.
Muzimu is the more refined of Gorongosa’s two premium camps. It provides an excellent base for travellers who want to experience the park’s wildlife and conservation work without sacrificing privacy, comfortable accommodation or good food.
Muzimu has six East African-style tented suites raised above the surrounding riverine landscape. Each suite includes a comfortable bedroom, en suite bathroom, ceiling fan and private timber deck overlooking the natural environment.
The tents provide the sounds and atmosphere of a traditional safari camp while retaining the privacy and facilities expected at this price level. They are intentionally understated, allowing the setting and safari experience to remain central.
The main lodge includes shaded lounge and dining areas beneath mature trees. Meals may be served indoors or outside according to weather and camp arrangements. A swimming pool provides a welcome place to cool down between safari activities, while massages and private wellness experiences can be requested at an additional cost.

Included activities generally comprise morning and afternoon game drives, guided walking safaris, full-day explorer drives and seasonal boating when conditions permit. Game-drive vehicles carry a maximum of six guests, creating a more personal experience with the guide.
Weekday visits to the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Laboratory and selected community projects may also form part of the scheduled program. These experiences reveal the science, education, healthcare and sustainable development work behind Gorongosa’s recovery.
Guests staying five nights or longer may be eligible for a pangolin foraging walk. Participation remains subject to availability, conservation priorities and animal welfare. Pangolins are not displayed for entertainment, and an encounter can never be guaranteed.
Night drives, private vehicles, Mount Gorongosa and coffee excursions, meetings with the restoration team and scenic helicopter flights are normally charged separately. Mozambique Travel will establish what is available, included and appropriate for each itinerary before the booking is confirmed.
Should You Choose Muzimu Lodge or Chicari Camp?
Muzimu and Chicari provide different experiences inside the same national park. Muzimu is smaller, more refined and positioned beside the Mussicadzi River. Its swimming pool, spacious suites and intimate atmosphere generally suit couples, honeymooners, mature travellers and guests who place a higher value on comfort and privacy.
Chicari is a seasonal tented camp overlooking a wildlife-rich pan. It has a more adventurous atmosphere and particularly appeals to photographers, birders and experienced safari travellers who want to feel closer to the surrounding wilderness.
Mozambique Travel inspected both camps in July 2026. We compare their locations, accommodation, atmosphere and overall cost against each client’s expectations. Travellers staying five or seven nights can also divide their time between the two camps, gaining different landscapes and safari perspectives without leaving Gorongosa.
Combine Muzimu Lodge with Vilanculos or Bazaruto
Gorongosa and the Bazaruto Archipelago create one of Mozambique’s strongest safari and beach combinations. The safari brings wildlife, conservation and guided exploration, while Vilanculos, Benguerra Island and Bazaruto Island provide warm-water beaches, marine activities and time to slow down.
Selected Air Gorongosa flights link the national park with the Bazaruto region on particular operating days. When schedules align, travellers can move between safari and beach without returning through Johannesburg. These services remain subject to aircraft availability, passenger minimums and operational confirmation.
Mozambique Travel can combine Muzimu with Azura Benguerra, Azura Marlin Beach, &Beyond Benguerra Island, Anantara Bazaruto, Kisawa Sanctuary or a suitable Vilanculos lodge. We select the beach property according to budget, transfer preference, atmosphere and whether the journey is a honeymoon, anniversary, family holiday or longer African itinerary.
Who Should Book Muzimu Lodge?
Muzimu is best suited to affluent international travellers looking for a distinctive safari beyond Africa’s most heavily visited wildlife regions. It works particularly well for repeat safari clients, couples, honeymooners, mature travellers, birders and guests interested in conservation, science and the recovery of damaged ecosystems.
The lodge is not designed for travellers seeking a low-cost safari, extensive resort facilities or guaranteed Big Five sightings. Gorongosa’s value lies in its biodiversity, varied habitats, low vehicle density and restoration story.
Children aged 12 and older are generally welcome. Guests with mobility concerns should discuss their requirements before booking because the lodge has raised accommodation, natural terrain and distances between guest areas. Mozambique Travel can request an appropriate suite and advise whether Muzimu or another Gorongosa property is more suitable.

Why Book Muzimu Lodge with Mozambique Travel?
A Muzimu safari involves more than choosing a tent and confirming a nightly rate. The Beira connection, Air Gorongosa operating days, light-aircraft baggage limits, camp transfers, compulsory levies and separately charged experiences must all be considered before flights and accommodation are finalized.
Mozambique Travel has arranged Gorongosa safaris since 2003. Our Managing Director inspected Muzimu and Chicari in July 2026, and our recent client bookings provide current knowledge of both camps and the journey into the park. We independently compare Muzimu with Chicari, explain the complete safari cost and recommend the right number of nights for each traveller.
Our team can also connect Muzimu with Vilanculos, Benguerra Island or Bazaruto Island. We coordinate the international and regional flights, Air Gorongosa service, camp arrangements, onward transfer and beach property as one itinerary. Clients have one experienced Mozambique specialist responsible for the complete safari and beach holiday.

Muzimu Tented Camp stands out for its small size, riverside location, and strong conservation focus. With only a few luxury tented suites, guests enjoy privacy, flexible safari activities, and direct access to walking safaris, canoeing, and research initiatives that highlight Gorongosa’s wildlife recovery rather than mass tourism.
The lodge lies near the Mussicadzi River, a productive wildlife corridor that supports lions, elephants, antelope, and wild dogs. The location provides quick access to open plains, wetlands, riverine forests, and seasonal pans. This variety ensures rewarding wildlife viewing in all directions, with game drives tailored to seasonal movements and guest interests.
Muzimu Lodge offers an immersive safari program tailored to every guest. Daily activities include guided jeep game drives, boating safaris on Gorongosa’s rivers and lakes, and walking expeditions with expert guides. Guests can canoe into untouched swamps, cycle to local villages, or take part in cultural tours. Unique highlights include visits to the Gorongosa Science Lab, birdwatching with specialist guides, and excursions to Mount Gorongosa waterfalls and coffee projects. Each activity emphasizes education, conservation, and close encounters with diverse wildlife, creating safaris that are both adventurous and meaningful.
The best wildlife viewing at Muzimu Tented Camp is generally during the dry season, when animals concentrate around rivers and floodplains. However, the green season offers lush scenery, excellent birding, and fewer visitors, appealing to travelers who prefer quieter, more immersive safari experiences.
Gorongosa National Park is home to an impressive diversity of species. Visitors at Muzimu can encounter lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rare African wild dogs. Antelope such as sable, nyala, and kudu roam the savannas, while unique species like Crawshay’s zebra and blue wildebeest add to the sightings. Birdlife is extraordinary, with fish eagles, kingfishers, and bee-eaters among the highlights. The park’s wetlands and forests also support hippos, crocodiles, reptiles, and myriad insects, making every safari drive or walk a chance to discover something new in this thriving ecosystem.
Muzimu Lodge is closely tied to Gorongosa’s sustainable tourism model, which invests directly into conservation and community initiatives. Guests can visit community-run coffee and honey projects on Mount Gorongosa, experience cultural exchanges in nearby villages, and learn from researchers at the park’s Science Lab. By staying at Muzimu, travelers contribute to wildlife protection, habitat restoration, and education programs. The lodge operates seasonally to reduce environmental impact and employs local staff, ensuring that tourism supports both biodiversity and the people who share this remarkable landscape.
Muzimu Tented Camp is well suited to bush and beach itineraries. Scheduled light aircraft transfers connect Gorongosa with Vilanculos, allowing travelers to pair their safari with beach time in the Bazaruto Archipelago or Tofo, creating a balanced Mozambique holiday without complex logistics.
