Why We Love Chicari Camp

Chicari is Gorongosa’s more adventurous premium safari camp. Ten en suite canvas tents overlook Chicari Pan, creating opportunities to watch wildlife and birdlife from private decks and the open-fronted main area. Fever trees, woodland and the changing colors of the pan give the camp a distinctive atmosphere from early morning until after sunset.

Eight tents are designed for couples or individual travellers. The Treehide Unit consists of two separate en suite tents sharing a spacious deck beneath an elevated wildlife hide. This unusual configuration works particularly well for a family with older children, two couples or friends who want to share the experience while retaining separate bedrooms and bathrooms.

Chicari particularly suits photographers, birders and experienced safari travellers who value immersion, excellent guiding and a traditional under-canvas atmosphere. Mozambique Travel inspected the rebuilt camp in July 2026 and has arranged Gorongosa safaris since 2003. We use that first-hand knowledge to explain how Chicari differs from Muzimu and whether its more adventurous character is right for each client.

MOZAMBIQUE TRAVEL

AT A GLANCE

Pan-Facing Safari Tents

Every en suite tent has a private deck facing Chicari Pan, allowing the surrounding landscape to remain part of the camp experience.

First-Hand Mozambique Travel Advice

Our July 2026 inspection informs honest camp comparisons, complete flight planning and carefully matched Gorongosa and Bazaruto holidays.

Photography and Birding Appeal

The pan, open views and varied habitats make Chicari particularly rewarding for photographers, birders and experienced safari travellers.

A More Adventurous Gorongosa Camp

Low-impact canvas accommodation and an open wilderness setting provide a closer connection to the sounds and rhythms of the park.

A Seasonal Tented Camp Overlooking Chicari Pan

Chicari Camp occupies a secluded position beside a year-round pan in Gorongosa National Park. Its name comes from a traditional clay vessel used to hold drinking water, an appropriate reference for a camp whose identity is shaped by the water in front of it.

The tents are set along the woodland edge, with fever trees framing open views across the pan. Guests remain connected to this setting throughout the day, whether leaving on an early game drive, watching birds from a private deck or gathering around the fire after sunset.

Chicari is high-spec but intentionally informal. Its appeal comes from comfortable canvas accommodation, strong guiding and a sense of being immersed in a remote wildlife area. It offers a more adventurous experience than Muzimu without becoming unnecessarily basic.

Eight Safari Tents and a Two-Tent Treehide Unit

Eight individual safari tents are positioned along the tree line, each with an en suite bathroom, solar-powered lighting, standing fan, mosquito protection and a private deck facing the pan. The interiors provide comfortable beds and practical storage while retaining the character of a traditional tented camp.

The Treehide Unit comprises two separate en suite tents beneath an elevated wooden hide. The tents share a large viewing deck but retain private sleeping and bathroom facilities. This arrangement is particularly suitable for two couples, close friends or a family with children aged 12 or older.

Raised walkways connect the tents with the open-fronted lounge and dining area. The main deck overlooks the pan, while the central firepit creates an atmospheric meeting place before and after dinner. Chicari does not have Muzimu’s swimming pool or riverside lodge environment. Guests come here for the camp’s outlook, wildlife potential and stronger sense of adventure.

Explore Gorongosa from Chicari Camp

Morning and afternoon game drives explore Gorongosa’s floodplains, grasslands, palm forests and wooded habitats. Vehicles generally carry no more than six guests, allowing guides time to interpret animal behavior, landscapes and the wider restoration of the park.

Guided walks shift the emphasis from distant sightings to tracks, insects, plants, birds and the smaller relationships within the ecosystem. Full-day explorer drives reach areas farther from camp, while boating may be offered when seasonal water levels and park operations allow.

Weekday visits to the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Laboratory and selected community projects can add scientific and social context to the safari. Guests staying five nights or longer may be eligible for a pangolin foraging walk, subject to conservation priorities, availability and animal welfare.

Night drives, private vehicles, Mount Gorongosa and coffee excursions, restoration-team experiences and helicopter flights generally cost extra. They should be requested before arrival rather than assumed to be included.

Is Chicari the Former Gorongosa Wild Camp?

Chicari replaced the former Gorongosa Wild Camp but should not be regarded as the same camp under a different name. It was rebuilt as a contemporary seasonal safari camp with upgraded en suite tents, raised walkways, an open main area and the distinctive Treehide Unit.

The former name remains relevant for travellers who previously visited or researched Gorongosa Wild Camp. The current experience is more comfortable and carefully designed, while preserving the close-to-nature atmosphere that attracted guests to the original camp.

From Chicari’s Wilderness to the Bazaruto Archipelago

Chicari provides an adventurous beginning to a Mozambique safari and beach holiday. After days structured around game drives, guided walks and conservation experiences, the beaches of Vilanculos, Benguerra Island or Bazaruto Island offer a complete change of pace.

Air Gorongosa operates selected services between the national park and the Bazaruto region. These flights can make an all-Mozambique combination more efficient, but operating days, minimum passenger numbers and aircraft availability must be confirmed before the camps and beach resort are finalized.

Mozambique Travel matches the beach stay to the traveller rather than automatically attaching the best-known resort. Options range from intimate Benguerra Island lodges to larger Bazaruto resorts, ultra-private residences and carefully selected Vilanculos properties.

Who Should Choose Chicari Camp?

Chicari is particularly well suited to photographers, birders, active couples, repeat visitors to Africa and travellers who prefer an immersive safari camp to a polished lodge. The pan provides a natural focal point for observing changing light, birdlife and occasional wildlife movements without leaving camp.

It also suits families with children aged 12 or older when the Treehide Unit is available. Guests should be comfortable with canvas accommodation, natural terrain and the sounds of the bush at night.

Travellers seeking greater refinement, a swimming pool or a smaller lodge may prefer Muzimu. Mozambique Travel inspected both properties in July 2026 and can recommend the right camp according to comfort expectations, mobility, budget and safari interests.

Why Book Chicari Camp with Mozambique Travel?

Chicari is expensive, seasonal and more complicated to reach than a mainstream African safari lodge. Choosing the correct camp, aligning the Beira and Air Gorongosa flights, understanding the additional levies and deciding how many nights to stay all affect whether the journey works well.

Mozambique Travel has arranged Gorongosa safaris since 2003. Our Managing Director inspected the rebuilt Chicari Camp and Muzimu Lodge in July 2026, and our recent client bookings give us current experience of the journey, costs and practical arrangements. We can explain honestly who should choose Chicari, who will be happier at Muzimu and when combining both camps is worth the additional transfer.

We also specialize in building complete safari and beach holidays. Our team coordinates the international and regional flights, Air Gorongosa service, luggage requirements, camp transfers and onward journey to Vilanculos or the Bazaruto Archipelago. Instead of managing separate reservations with several suppliers, clients have one experienced Mozambique specialist responsible for the entire itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

We’re Mozambique’s trusted travel experts with over 20 years of experience creating unforgettable safaris and beach escapes. Contact our team today to book your 2026 island getaway and discover why Mozambique remains one of Africa’s most breathtaking destinations.

  • Is Chicari Camp the same property as Gorongosa Wild Camp?

Chicari replaced the former Gorongosa Wild Camp but is a newly rebuilt safari camp rather than a simple name change. It has upgraded en suite tents, raised walkways, an open pan-facing main area and a two-tent Treehide Unit. The new camp retains the adventurous atmosphere associated with the original Wild Camp.

  • What accommodation and Treehide options does Chicari offer?

Chicari has eight individual en suite safari tents and one Treehide Unit containing two additional en suite tents. Every tent has a private deck facing Chicari Pan. The Treehide tents share a spacious viewing deck beneath an elevated hide, making them suitable for two couples, friends or a family with children aged 12 or older.

  • What is included in the Chicari Camp rate, and which costs are additional?

Rates generally include accommodation, all meals, selected local beverages, scheduled shared safari activities, laundry, limited Wi-Fi and VAT. Park fees, the Conservation and Community Levy, flights, premium drinks, night drives, private vehicles, Mount Gorongosa excursions, helicopter flights and gratuities normally cost extra. Mozambique Travel confirms the complete price before booking.

  • How do you fly to Chicari Camp through Beira?

Most international guests fly from Johannesburg or Maputo to Beira and connect with Air Gorongosa to Chitengo Airstrip. Shared flights generally operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, take approximately 35 minutes and require minimum passenger numbers. Guests then continue to Chicari on a prearranged camp transfer.

  • Is Chicari Camp or Muzimu Lodge better for your safari?

Chicari suits photographers, birders and adventurous travellers wanting a classic tented-camp atmosphere beside a wildlife-rich pan. Muzimu is smaller and more refined, with riverside suites and a swimming pool. Neither camp is better for everyone. Mozambique Travel inspected both in July 2026 and can recommend one or combine them.

  • When is Chicari Camp open, and how many nights should you stay?

Chicari normally operates from 1 April to 30 November. Four nights provide a worthwhile safari, while five nights allow more time for different habitats, walking and conservation experiences. Longer stays may qualify for complimentary-night offers and can be divided between Chicari and Muzimu, subject to current availability and terms.

  • What wildlife and conservation experiences are possible at Chicari?

Gorongosa supports elephants, lions, African wild dogs, buffalo, large antelope populations and exceptional birdlife. Sightings from the pan and on safari vary naturally. Guests staying five nights or longer may be eligible for a pangolin foraging walk, but participation depends on conservation work, availability and animal welfare and can never be guaranteed.
